I was pleased to give a keynote speech last week in Parliament for the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association’s British Islands and Mediterranean Region Conference. The theme of the Conference was Inclusive Parliaments and I spoke to the many delegates visiting the UK on the work that the Procedure Committee, that I chair, has been doing on this important issue.
I have organised many coach trips for constituents and they have all been really successful. Due to the coach trip on 12th May filling up really quickly, I am pleased to announce that I will be organising another one on Friday 23rd June.
Karen has welcomed the announcement that 332 extra police officers have been recruited in Staffordshire since September 2019, bringing the total number of officers up to 1,980
6,100 families in the Moorlands are eligible for a further means-tested cost of living payment worth £301 from today, and £900 in total for 2023-4.
These payments will give families much needed support, protecting vulnerable people who are most exposed to rising prices.
I am always pleased to speak to local businesses and would like to thank Staffordshire Chambers of Commerce and Buxton and Leek College for arranging this.
It was a great opportunity to hear from local businesses and update people on progress on the work to reopen the Leek to Stoke railway line.
I presented a petition in Parliament yesterday on behalf of residents in Biddulph. I have asked the Secretary of State to look into the issue and am also working with County Councillor, Keith Flunder to see what the County Council can provide.
It was good to meet the Chief Constable and the PFCC in Parliament together with my fellow Staffordshire MPs.
These meetings are really useful and are an opportunity to raise local issues directly with the Chief Constable and the PFCC as well as having a regular update from them regarding the situation in Staffordshire.
I was delighted to pop into the Nicholson Institute Gallery to see an exhibition that four artists who attended Leek School of Art and Crafts are holding. The exhibition is to mark 50 years since leaving the School and it was fascinating to see the artists’ unique styles on display.
