The Year of the Moorlands Village - Horton

George Heath was born in Gratton and became known locally as the “Moorland Poet.” He worked as a farm labourer and builder, writing poetry inspired by the surrounding moorland. Tragically, while working on a church renovation in Horton, he caught a chill that developed into consumption (tuberculosis), leading to his death at the age of 25 in 1869. He is buried at St Michael’s Church, Horton, where a memorial marks his life and work.
