We have so many great schools here in Staffordshire Moorlands and I was delighted to learn that the Secretary of State for Education has agreed to enter into a Funding Agreement to allow St Luke's CofE Primary School and St Michael's CofE First School to become Academies.
I am very pleased to hear that these schools have taken this new step and I am sure that becoming an Academy will greatly benefit the teachers, pupils and the parents at St Luke’s and St Michael’s.
As your Member of Parliament it is always a pleasure to visit local schools to speak to the pupils and the staff and last week it was the turn of Woodcroft First School and St Edwards CofE Academy. I was pleased to meet the Head Teachers and listen to their concerns regarding funding.
One of the issues that many of you have contacted me about is Staffordshire County Council’s proposal to stop funding for school crossing patrols. I do understand everyone’s concerns and will be looking at possible solutions to this problem with Councillors.
It was then off to Moorlands Radio where we discussed many local issues including the new extended GP services followed by some constituency surgeries.
I also chaired the regular liaison meeting between residents, Councillors, the Environment Agency and John Pointon & Sons in Cheddleton that helps those living nearby express their concerns and to hear from the business about how they are dealing with them.
Finally, I was disappointed to learn that Leek was not shortlisted for the Great British High Streets Awards. I am so proud of our town centre and all our local shops and businesses. I have been out talking to local people and agree with them that we have so much to celebrate and offer to both residents and visitors alike.
