It’s certainly been rather a wet few weeks in the Moorlands with the rain affecting some of the many Summer events that we hold here such as the Leek Show and also the Garden Party that I had the pleasure to be asked to open at Christ Church in Biddulph Moor.
But we are Moorlanders and as always, despite the rain and having to hold the event indoors, local residents still turned up to show their support and I was delighted to learn that over £1,300 was raised towards the hall makeover appeal.
The photo shows Karen at the event with Terry Williams, lay preacher at Christ Church and Cllr John Jones.
Last week also saw Victory over Japan Day also known as VJ Day which is celebrated on 15th August each year and is the day which saw Japan surrender during the Second World War, effectively ending it. As your MP, I was proud and honoured to be invited to join members of the local Royal British Legion branch at a Remembrance service at the Nicholson Memorial.
Finally I would just like to mention the fantastic work that Staffordshire Fire and Rescue do and encourage local residents to get involved in their Summer Safety Campaign to help prevent us having a repeat of last Summer where much of our beautiful countryside in Staffordshire Moorlands suffered terrible Moorland fires. Even with all the rain we have seen, it is possible that a fire could be started accidentally causing terrible damage.
It was such a worrying time with the risk of the fires spreading and I remember visiting the Roaches last year to see just how much damage has been done by the fire up there.
It was devastating to learn about the amount of time it is going to take to bring the land back to a healthy state so please do visit Staffordshire Fire and Rescue’s website and facebook page which both have lots of useful advice.
