Post Office Closures

Public Meeting Held in the Moorlands

Staffordshire Moorlands Conservatives held a public meeting in Leek on Friday 11 April to highlight the proposed closure of six Post Offices in the Moorlands. There was some lively debate, but agreement that the critical point is that everyone comes together to try to save the branches affected by the proposals.

Karen Bradley, the Conservative Prospective Parliamentary Candidate, said;

"So many people will be affected by the closure of their local Post Office that it is vital that we come together as a community and do what we can to fight these closures.  We are organising a petition that will be presented to Gordon Brown at Downing Street and we are urging people to make individual representations to the Post Office using specially printed representation cards that will be delivered to all households in affected areas.  These activities have had positive results in other areas and have resulted in Post Office branches threatened with closure being saved.

The representations have to demonstrate why the branch closing will have a detrimental affect on local people.  Examples might be a lack of public transport, low car ownership in the area, or the number of elderly residents who struggle to use local buses where they exist.  In the debate, so many points were raised about why we can't afford to lose our local services and the impact it would have on our communities and villages.  I am sure that we can make enough noise to be heard."
