EU Referendum Campaign

The local Conservative Action Team spent Saturday morning in Leek market campaigning for a referendum on the EU's Lisbon Treaty. According to the Government, the Treaty, which is currently being debated in Parliament, is not the same as the original Constitution and therefore does not need a referendum before it can be introduced into UK law. But the Conservatives argue that the Treaty is essentially the same as the original Constitution and Labour should stick to their manifesto promise to hold a referendum.

Karen Bradley, Conservative Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Staffordshire Moorlands, said:
"I believe that Labour should stick to its manifesto promise and give the British people a referendum. The strength of feeling in the Moorlands should not be ignored.  The many people who stopped to speak to us on the stall on Saturday were agreed that we have been let down - including people who think the Treaty is a good thing - and that we should be given the referendum we were promised."

The Conservatives are collecting signatures from across the Moorlands. Anyone interested in signing up should contact Karen at 30 Russell Street in Leek.
